Richard 'Dick' Frederick Cook was born on 16 September 1920 at Greenwich, London, the son of Henry Edward Cook of 56 Elliscombe Road, Charlton, London. A gas fitter's mate by trade, he attested for the Royal Engineers at Charlton on 26 October 1938 and transferred to the Royal Artillery on 1 August 1940. Serving as a stretcher bearing during the North African Campaign, he later qualified as a Parachutist with the Army Air Corps and witnessed active service in Southern France from 15 August 1944-28 August 1944; sold with original Soldier's Service and Pay Book which notes that he was discharged at Edinburgh on 2 August 1946:

'Honest, sober & hardworking man who has carried out his duties in a very efficient manner. He is a willing worker, very reliable & trustworthy.'
