A Second World War campaign group of five awarded to Corporal J. R. Sowerby, No. 578 Field Company, Royal Engineers, who earned a 'mention'

John Raymond Sowerby was born on 17 March 1915 at Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, and lived with his wife Sheila Mary Sowerby at 2 Bailey Street, Stockton. A plasterer, concreter and brick layer by trade, he attested for the Royal Engineers at Bradwell on 30 May 1940 and served in North Africa and the Mediterranean, being later mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 19 July 1945, refers). Appearing on the casualty list on 24 August 1944 whilst serving with No. 378 Field Company, he died in October 1973 at Teesside in the North Riding of Yorkshire; sold with original Soldier's Service and Pay Book, this somewhat worn and tatty with loose pages but offering a good deal of information.
