Bernard David Andrews was killed in action on 15 May 1941, aged 21, as the British attempted to inflict attrition upon Axis forces and to secure positions for a general offensive towards Tobruk. Attacking in three columns of tanks and infantry, the British faced strong enemy resistance which culminated in the loss of Fort Capuzzo and the German recovery of Musaid. In total they lost 206 men, five tanks destroyed and 13 damaged, and failed to meet almost all of the objectives, only briefly holding the Halfaya Pass.
The son of John and Annie Andrews of Holloway, London, Bernard is buried at Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery; sold with copied casualty entry confirming service number as 3970903.
