Robert Stanley Watson was born around 1913, the son of Gertrude Watson and stepson of Reginald C. H. Burns, of Stratford, Essex. He died of wounds received during a border skirmish on 6 September 1940, three days before the Italian invasion of Egypt, whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster). At that time his Battalion were stationed in defensive positions around the port of Mersa Matruh on the main highway from the Nile Delta to the Libyan border. It held significant strategic importance as the terminus for a single-track railway, which passed through El Alamein, and later became a major objective for the Afrika Corps who finally succeeded in capturing the town on 29 June 1942. Aged 27 years, Watson rests in El Alamein War Cemetery; sold with copied research.
