F. W. Murray served in Palestine with the 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Sent with his Battalion to northern France as part of the British Expeditionary Force, he was initially reported as missing in May 1940, later confirmed as a Prisoner of War. Given the number '21563', he was held at Stalag 357 at Fallingbostel in Lower Saxony. By the winter of 1940, around 40,000 prisoners of war were registered at this camp and assigned to various Arbeitskommando ('work camps'), many being captured at St. Valery with the 51st Highland Division. Stalag 357 later became home to a number of British paratroopers captured at Arnhem, led by the formidable R.S.M. John C. Lord of the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment; sold with copied research.
