George William Whittle was born around 1899 at Lenton, Nottinghamshire, the son of general labourer John Whittle and his wife Sarah Jane, of 93 Park Street, New Lenton, Nottingham. He enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment on 25 April 1924 and was appointed Unpaid Lance Corporal on 30 January 1936. He died aged 44 years whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment and is buried in the Fayid War Cemetery, Egypt, his headstone bearing the inscription: 'He lies beside his fallen comrades. Ever Remembered by Sisters and Brothers.'
