The 1st Battalion, 1st Gurkha Rifles arrived in France towards the end of 1914, having been held back in Egypt for the defence of the Suez Canal on its way from India. It remained in France until the end of 1915 when it was withdrawn and went on to serve in Mesopotamia and Palestine. The war service of Balbir Gurung in Supplement to the Indian Army List 1939 confirms that he served in France, Mesopotamia and that he also served in Waziristan 1919-21 and 1921-24. Promoted Jemadar in the Indian Army Service Corps (MT) in 1930, he served as a Subedar-Major, apparently earning the Order of British India upon retirement.
