J. Prendergast was wounded in action in North West Europe on 18 July 1944 whilst serving as a Sergeant in the 5th Battalion of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. As part of Operation Goodwood, the Battalion launched south from St. Hororine and Longueval towards the commune of Troarn in Normandy accompanied by units of the 2nd and 5th Battalions, Seaforth Highlanders. For ten days they successfully held their objectives under almost continuous fire until 152 Brigade were relieved by 152 Brigade (The 51st Highland Division, The Triangle, Normandy, June-July 1944, refers).
He was further wounded on 4 November 1944 in preparation for Operation Noah as the Highland Division attempted to move north and support the allied bridgehead between the River Waal and the River Rijn in Holland, to the west of Nijmegen and Arnhem. On 2 December 1944 the Germans blew the Lek dyke and flooded the 'Island', which was later reoccupied by men of the 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Pushed east of the Maas, the Germans awaited further operations in the New Year to clear them on towards the Rhine; sold with copied roll confirming wounds and pre-war service in Palestine with the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
