General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine (2656702. Gdsmn. A. C. Veale. C. Gds.), extremely fine
Adrian Clarence Edrich Veale was born on 13 June 1914 at Axbridge, Somerset, the only son of Albert and Winifred Veale of the Parade Rooms, Taunton. Educated at North Town School, he took early employment at Messrs. Brakes, East Reach, before attesting for the Coldstream Guards in 1933. Transferred to the Reserve in 1937, Veale obtained a Civil Service appointment as a telephonist at Aldershot Post Office before being recalled to the Colours at the outbreak of the Second World War and transferred to the Corps of the Military Foot Police on 1 September 1939 (The Somerset County Herald, refers).
Posted with the B.E.F. to France, Veale was fortunate to make it back to England having 'found himself behind enemy lines at Dunkirk' (The recollections of his daughter, Mrs Patrisia Anne Veale Carrington, refer). Accordingly, he rode his motorbike through France to St. Nazaire, where he was able to board a collier to Milford Haven.
Sent briefly to York for respite, Veale was posted to the Far East and died on 21 January 1942 in the lead up to the Fall of Singapore. Aged 27 years, he left a wife and young child, then living at Farnham in Surrey. He is buried in Kranji War Cemetery; sold with copied research, including a photograph of the recipient.
