James Joyce served with the Rhodesian Regiment (No. 156) from 11 November 1899-16 October 1900, the 2nd Brabant's Light Horse (No. 20161) from 10 November 1900-20 May 1901, the Prince of Wales's Light Horse (No. 34414) from 13 June 1901-16 December 1901 and with the 3rd New South Wales Imperial Bushmen from 4 February-31 May 1902. He was also in receipt of a 5-clasp Queen's South Africa Medal.
