(x) India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (Asstt. Surgn: W. R. Mc.Ardle. I.S.M.D.), unit officially re-engraved, good very fine

William Richard McArdle served as Assistant Apothecary to the 85th King's Light Infantry (Bucks Volunteers) at Simla in 1875, and passed the lower standard in Hindustani on 4 October 1875 (The "Englishman's" Overland Mail, refers). He served as 1st Class Assistant Surgeon from 1897-98 at the British Field Hospital, Tochi, with the Field Force Medical Department, later dedicating the final years of his career to service with the India Sub-Medical Department.

He retired with the rank of Honorary Captain on 31 May 1904 (The Homeward Mail, refers). Remaining in India, McArdle settled in Lucknow and proudly escorted his niece, Miss Helena Ann Day, down the aisle of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Dilkusha, on her wedding day on 6 March 1905 (The Homeward Mail, refers). He remained on the Indian Army Quarterly List for 1 January 1912, his rank recorded as Surgeon-Captain.
