(x) India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (Surgn: Lt. Coll: M. D. O'Connell. A.M.S.), nearly extremely fine

Matthew Daniel O'Connell was born on 5 April 1847 at Cork, Ireland, the son of Phillip O'Connell and Jane Cue, and husband of Annie Georgina Lloyd whom he married at Bombay on 11 November 1872. Attesting for the Army Medical Service, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon on 1 April 1871, Surgeon on 1 March 1873, Surgeon Major on 1 April 1883, Lieutenant Colonel on 1 April 1891 and Brigade Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel on 7 November 1895, having witnessed extensive service in the Soudan and India. Sometime appointed Colonel Physician, his papers are held in the Wellcome Library of the National Archives. O'Connell died on 22 January 1921 at Leeds, Yorkshire, after spending his final years living with his wife at Grimston Kirkby Wharfe and North Milford, Towton. His obituary, published in The Yorkshire Evening Post on 25 January 1921, adds a little more detail:

'Death of Colonel M. D. O'Connell

The death of Colonel Matthew Daniel O'Connell (73) has occurred at the residence of his son, Dr. A. P. O'Connell, 73, Harehills Avenue, Leeds. Colonel O'Connell retired about twelve years ago from the Royal Army Medical Corps. He had served most of his time in India. His last appointment was Principal Medical Officer for York, under the Northern Command.'
