John Chapman was born in October 1873 at Lancaster, the son of coachman Henry Chapman, and attested at Woolwich for the Royal Artillery on 8 March 1892. Sent to South Africa from 15 November 1899-6 September 1902, he was discharged in consequence of the termination of his first period of engagement; sold with copied service record.
