British War Medal with M.I.D. oakleaves (Lt. Commr. F. Atkinson. R.N.V.R.), nearly extremely fine

[O.B.E.] London Gazette 1 January 1919.

Felton Atkinson attested for the R.N.V.R. as Sub Lieutenant on 27 October 1914 and witnessed initial service at Eastchurch. Admitted to Chatham Hospital for 2 weeks from 28 October 1915 suffering from an injury to his mouth resulting in the loss of teeth, Atkinson transferred from Daedalus to Cranwell on 15 January 1917 and was granted the acting rank of Temporary Lieutenant Commander 3 months later - while holding a special technical allowance of 10/ per day. He was later Mentioned in Despatches for 'zeal and devotion to duty with the R.N.A.S. during the period July to December 1917' (London Gazette 1 May 1918, refers). Later transferring to the Royal Air Force and appointed Major, Atkinson was also awarded the O.B.E. in the New Year's Honours List, likely for service with the R.A.F technical branch.
