Arthur Percy Lanham was born on 25 May 1898 at Camberwell, London, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 9 November 1916, giving his occupation as railway clerk. Posted to Manxman as Aircraftsman 1st Class on 14 March 1917, Lanham transferred to the Royal Air Force in March 1918.
