Sidney Herbert Bowers was born on 15 September 1879 at Bedford, Bedfordshire, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 24 March 1915, giving his occupation as boat builder. He served aboard a wide variety of ships including the Laconia and kite balloon ship Manica, before transferring to the Royal Air Force in early 1918.
