James Robert Leverett was born on 27 June 1890 at Hampstead, Middlesex, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 26 May 1915, giving his occupation as optician's assistant. Posted to a series of R.N.A.S. stations in England, he transferred to R.N.A.S. Plymouth in November 1917, before later serving with the Royal Air Force.
