Ernest Charles Kipping was born on 23 February 1893 at Shoreditch, London, and enlisted for 12 years' service with the Royal Navy from 5 October 1911. Posted to Hibernia as Stoker 2nd Class, it appears that naval life was not to his liking, his mother purchasing his discharge for £20 at Swanage on 22 May 1912, the application for a 'free' discharge having been refused. Kipping subsequently re-entered the R.N.A.S. as Petty Officer Mechanic on 31 December 1914.
