Henry Bathurst, Lord Chancellor (1771-78), AE Medal, 1776, by J Kirk after Isaac Gosset, rev. Chancery Court, 36.5mm. (BHM 203; Eimer 766; BM ref. MG.1520), spotted surfaces, otherwise a bolder very fine, very rare

A lifelong friend and confidant of Admiral William Howe, Bathurst was a main protagonist in the striving for peace between Great Britain and the American colonies during the Wars of Independence, the causes of which were largely due to Howe's own support for the 'Intolerable Acts'. Crucially, this medal bears the date of the outset of hostilities in 1776.
