Great Britain: British Motor Company Ltd., £1 preference shares, 189(8), #627, signed by Harry Hewitt Griffin as director and Charles Jarrott as secretary, scrollwork at left, maroon. This was Harry J Lawson's main company for the acquisition of the Daimler patents with which he was to control the motor manufacturing business in the UK. Originally incorporated as the British Motor Syndicate in 1896 it was reorganised in 1898 as above. The company acquired numerous automobile patents, paying outrageous sums for them, most notably the Pennington patents which proved to be worthless. The company was again reorganised as the British Motor Traction Company in 1901 by racing driver S.F.Edge and Lawson gradually disappeared from the scene. A key piece in British automobile manufacturing. VF and rare.
