Envelope to England bearing G.B. ½d. with Portsmouth and Southsea datestamp and South Africa 6d. with George datestamp (18.1), marked "Retired from race Khartoum 3rd Oct. 36. Arrived George Cape South Africa 6 Oct.", autographed "V Smith" and with flight cachet below; accompanied by a contemporary photograph of Smith standing by his Miles Sparrow aircraft and signed "To Mr. Wyndham with Kind Regards V Smith". Note: Victor Smith was forced down with oil trouble in Jugoslavia and Greece, ultimately withdrawing from the race when he reached Cairo on 3 October. He continued the journey reaching Johannesburg on 6 October
