Harry John Hulcoop was born around 1898 at Alton, the son of Henry Hullcoop, a builder, of 27 The Butts, Alton, Hampshire. He worked as a grocer's clerk before joining the Royal Air Force, later being granted a commission in the Medical Branch of the Royal Air Force (London Gazette 11 June 1940, refers).
