1928 "Ile de France" Issue
1928, Sept. 7. Envelope from New York to Paris endorsed "Voie Ile de France/Plane Service Air Mail", with United States 5c. and 30c. pair, cancelled on dispatch, showing "Mail Rescued at Sea from Plane/Abandoned 400 Miles from Paris" handstamp at left, with arrival on reverse on the 15th. On 13 September the seaplane of the "Ile de France", soon after taking off, had a magneto problem and was forced down on a rough sea not far from The Scilly Isles. The plane was drifting in the Channel and towed by another ship to Brest after having been found by fishermen. The mail and the fliers landed in Great Britain and the mail was forwarded to Paris on the 15th (Nierinck reference). Very interesting and rare, with only part of the mail showing the special cachet of the accident. Photo
