1928 "Ile de France" Issue
10fr. on 90c. red, accompanied by "Semeuse Lignée" 50c. (3) on 3 September envelope to New York and tied by "new-york au havre/b" octagonal datestamps, showing a Boston datestamp, also dated on 3 September, on reverse; some peripheral faults to envelope. After the August flight during the New York-Le Havre journey, the usage of the surcharged "Ile de France" values was no longer postally permitted; in this instance, it may be presumed that the sender, probably a member of the crew of the "Ile de France", had previously acquired the stamp and applied it to this correspondence during the journey arriving to United States in September; the octagonal datestamp shows a "b" at base denoting the postal brigade on board, which in this case is no longer "d", therefore the usage of this datestamp was exceptionally applied on the surcharged values. Probably the latest usage recorded of this stamp. Signed Calves, Roumet and Enzo Diena. Spink Maury 3. Photo
