1928 "Ile de France" Issue
10fr. on 90c. red, two examples applied on 23 August envelope to Short Hills, United States, tied by "new-york au havre/d" octagonal datestamp, showing special six-line cachet of the "Ile-de-France" catapult flights at left, with Paris datestamp on reverse. Envelope roughly opened at top left with part of the corner missing, preserving its contents where the sender states that "the stamp that carries this letter will doubtless be a rarity, for it is the inaugural service of the ship to shore service that starts tomorrow morning from this boat. I intend to put two stamps on this letter...". A very rare multiple franking of the "Berthelot" surcharged stamp. Signed Calves. Spink Maury 3. Photo
