In 1878 Netherlands Indies postal agencies opened in the Straits Settlements at Penang and Singapore. During their 43 years existence both offices played an important role in the despatch of mails from, to and within the Netherlands East Indies

Netherlands Indies 7½c + 7½c carmine reply half of reply paid card (HG 13) to Java, received in Singapore 14 August (backstamp), sent back to Bandoeng (29.8), via "n.i agent singapore" squared-circle d.s. (Type 4; 25.8) and showing Weltevreden (28.8) and Tjiandjoer (28.8) datestamps. Rare reply card used in Singapore. Photo
