In 1878 Netherlands Indies postal agencies opened in the Straits Settlements at Penang and Singapore. During their 43 years existence both offices played an important role in the despatch of mails from, to and within the Netherlands East Indies
1893 (6 Apr.) German 10pf. carmine card to Deli, Sumatra, cancelled by German Maritime "deutsche seepost/ost-/asiatische/hauptlinie" c.d.s. and showing "n.i. postagent penang" c.d.s. (26.4). The card was written on board "S.S. Neckar" on it's Bremen-Suez Canal- Far East run. Scarce.
