A Victorian oak hall letter box, 21½" high, in the form of a rectangular sentry box with slatted peaked roof and sides, the door with hinged flap inscribed "letters" above a glazed arched original watercolour panel, depicting a soldier of the Northumberland Artillery Militia, painted and signed by Harry Payne, dated (18)84, with presentation plaque beneath, inscribed "From Captn. F.D. Blake, July 1884", with regimental badge to pediment. Retailer's plaque for W. Thornhill, New Bond Street & diamond registration plaque to back. A spectacular and outstanding example. Exceptionally rare, not only with a regimental badge and dated, but also with the artist and subject both named. Photo
