(x) Ship Letters
Because private ships did not maintain regular schedules, unless the ship is identified on the cover it is very difficult to determine what vessel carried a particular letter. The Bermuda Royal Gazette
recorded the appropriate shipping news often permitting the ship's identification
Ship Letters
1823 (15 July) entire letter ex the Saumarez correspondence from Cape of Good Hope to H.M. Salisbury at Guernsey with ship letter rating of "1/6" (deleted), upon arrival redirected "Via Falmouth" to him on board H.M.S. Salisbury at Bermuda, whence she had gone and newly rated with packet charge of "2/3", showing "post office/cape of good hope" oval datestamp (30.7) and with boxed "india letter/dover" (In.2) handstamp on reverse. A very rare letter with a combination of ship and packet rates to Bermuda with carriage to the island most likely carried by Admiralty packet Lord Montague from Falmouth to Halifax and thence by HM Sloop Rifleman to Bermuda.
