The Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902
1901 (Jan.) envelope (complete with letter) from Assistant Commander General B.J. Viljoen at Durban to Middleburg bearing 1d., marked "opened by boers" in blue crayon with the envelope roughly opened damaging the adhesive and seal with a Boer censor label, the reverse with Pretoria and Middleburg datestamps; the envelope requesting the Commander at Middleburg to "receive between 70 & 80 soldiers taken by me as prisoners of war at Belfast...... Send an ambulance wagon.... to convey some sick". An interesting item from this famous general who became a P.O.W. himself on St. Helena
