The Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902
1900 (22 Aug.) unfranked envelope from Lt. General Sir F. Carrington, commanding the Rhodesian Field Force, written from Otto's Hoop to Lady Carrington in England, marked "No stamps available" and sent out via Mafeking with squared-circle (25.8) and London (15.9) datestamps on face; the letter including "On the 16th. I sent out Lord Errol to clear the front but he could not get far and at last I had to go out and re-inforce him with Grey's Brigade. We knocked the Boers pretty hard as the Boer ambulance came with a flag of truce next day and we took 16 bodies". Also 1896 letter from Lord Grey at Enkeldoorn to Chief Staff Officer Major-General Carrington stating that Rhodes' opinion was that a strong patrol should not be sent to Matokos, and with a copy of his reply on reverse
