1855 (1 Jan. ) double rate envelope from Beechworth to Ireland, marked "Per Steamer Argo" and "Registered Letter", rated "2/-" and "1/6", bearing Octagonal 1/- pair (small faults) tied by unclear barred oval and manuscript "Registered" and showing, on reverse, Melbourne, London (18.3) and arrival datestamps. A scarce retaliatory rate cover. Photo

Note: The ship letter rate had been reduced to 6d by the UK on 1 October 1854, but Victoria refused to participate and the U.K. retaliated by increasing its rates. Victoria succumbed and reduce the rate to 6d. on 1 July 1855, the U.K. then reducing its rate accordingly.
