1854 (26 Dec.) envelope from Coleraine to Locarno, Switzerland, bearing "registered" 1/- with Octagonal 1/- tied by indistinct barred ovals, showing manuscript "6" and "1/-", framed "colonies/&c. art 13", "Crown/registered" h.s., unframed "chargé" and Calais entry c.d.s., all in red, with Melbourne, London and arrival datestamps on reverse; a little soiled. This is the earliest known registered cover to Switzerland and one of three recorded with the Registered 1/- and accountancy h.s. RPSV Certificate (2014). Photo

Note: Between November 1854 and February 1857, there were no contract mails with the Australian colonies as all steamships had been withdrawn due to the Crimean War, so mail was carried by contracted Liverpool clippers, or private ship.
