William Lionel Wyllie and WWI Naval Officers
1916-19 a group of letters and notes which includes an account of the taking the Greek Fleet at Salamis in November 1916, written in pencil with a small sketch showing three ships; illustration and notes of the Battle of Jutland by Admiral Hugh Evan-Thomas including a plan of the position of the British ships of the Vth Battle Squadron forming astern of H.M.S. Agincourt (used in his book More Great Sea Fights in the Great War); letter from Admiral John Green from H.M.S. New Zealand dated July 1917 giving descriptive notes on the Battle of Jutland, there is also a sketch by Wyllie (?) on H.M.S. New Zealand paper of the "Relative size of 12" splash on N.Z."; Captain Robert Lawson's account of the Battle of Jutland on H.M.S. Chester letterhead dated December 1917 where he gives a detailed description of shell splashes; 1918 letter with sketches from his nephew, William, serving on H.M.S. Mindful where he describes and illustrates the sinking of the SS Justica and the capture of Otto von Schrader on U Boat 124 and the subsequent sinking (this was this boat's first patrol); letter and sketch from Lieutenant Edward Billyard-Leake dated March 1919 on the blockade of Zeebrugge on Admiralty paper. There is also an official report (typed) of an aerial battle over France in 1917 with Wyllie's sketches and two sketches of the details of W.W.I parachutes by unknown artists. A fascinating group. William Lionel Wyllie (1851 – 1931) also known as W L Wyllie was a prolific English painter of maritime themes in both oils and watercolours. He has been described as "the most distinguished marine artist of his day".
