(1896) (17 October) A.L.S. on embossed "Sirdareh, Cairo" to Lady Charles Beresford, he thanks her for her letters and sends his wishes to her husband, "... thank Charlie personally for all the assistance he gave me. The Navy did splendidly & had really a tough bit of work at Hafir.". He continues with news of the injuries of Colville (probably William) but how he was now on the mend. The letter is signed "Herbert Kitchener". There is a repaired split in the paper and some tone spots. Photo

Kitchener won victories at the Battle of Ferkeh in June 1896 and the Battle of Hafir in September 1896, earning him national fame in the United Kingdom and promotion to major-general on 25 September 1896
