1704 (20 November) letter headed, "His Royall Highness Prince George of Denmark & Lord High Admll of England Ireland etc and Generalissimo of all her Majesty's Forces etc" to Capt. Taylor commander of her Majesty's ship the Charles Galley at Spithead requiring him to sail his ship to Portsmouth for refitting and victualling for three months Channel Service. Prince George of Denmark and Norway, Duke of Cumberland (1653 – 1708), was the husband of Queen Anne, who reigned over Great Britain from 1702. George did not play a senior role in government until his wife Anne succeeded as Queen on William's death in 1702. Anne appointed him generalissimo of all English military forces on 17 April, and Lord High Admiral, the official but nominal head of the Royal Navy, on 20 May.
HMS Charles Galley was a 32–gun fifth rate of the Royal Navy built at Woolwich Dockyard and launched in 1676. Rebuilt in 1693, and again at Deptford Dockyard in 1710. She was renamed HMS Torrington after a third rebuild in 1729, and was hulked in 1740. She was finally sold on 12 July 1744.
