Nine Years' War in Ireland
1602 (24 June) folio Privy Council Warrant addressed "To our very good Lord, the Lord Buckhurst, Lord High Treasurer of England, York". Written on laid paper, the letter relates to "coat and conduct money and conductors wages" for the troops raised in the County of York "for her Majesty's service in Ireland". According to the warrant 300 men were sent to Chester in July 1601, 150 in January 1602 and 200 in July 1602. The total cost of the operation was £283 14s. 8d. which was to be delivered by the treasury "unto the bearer thereof, John Thorneburghe, Esquire, who is appointed by the said Lord Burghley to receive the same for his use". A marginal note reads, "Mr Skinner, make an order. TB"

The letter is signed "Tho. Egerton" (Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley), "T. Buckhurst" (Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst), "Notingham" (Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham), "E. Worcester" (Edward Somerset, 4th Earl of Worcester), "W. Knollys" (William Knollys, 1st Earl of Banbury), "J. Stanhope" (John Stanhope, 1st Baron Stanhope), "Ro Cecyll" (Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury), "J. Popham" (Sir John Popham) and "J. Herbert" (Sir John Herbert). There is some wear to the outer cover and the inner letter has been affixed to card for preservation; there is an endorsement on the inside with calculations for the costs for the number of men supplied. A fascinating document with so many illustrious signatures. Photo
