(x) Barbados
Early Letters and Handstamps
1771 (6 Feb.) entire from Philip Quaque at Cape Coast Castle, Gold Coast, to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in London, sent across the Atlantic, probably in a slave ship or naval vessel, to Barbados and showing, on reverse, "barba/does" handstamp (crossed by filing crease) and Bishopmark, then forwarded by private ship, rated "5" and showing "liverpool/ship lre" handstamp on face. A remarkable cover with only one other example of mail sent via this routing thought to exist. Photo

Note: The Rev. Thomas Thompson established the Society's first mission outpost at Cape Coast Castle in 1752. In 1754 he arranged for three students to travel to England to be trained as missionaries. Two of the students died of ill health but the third , Philip Quaque, survived and became the first African to receive ordination in the Anglican Communion
