Advanced to Petty Officer Telegraphist in October 1938, he was serving at the Liverpool shore establishment Eaglet, Flagship of the C.-in-C. In October 1940, he removed to President III, which establishment was associated with the training of personnel for Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships (D.E.M.S.). As per his service record he was likewise employed on being advanced to C.P.O. Telegraphist and awarded his L.S. & G.C. Scholes next joined the destroyer Saumarez and he was similarly employed when she was mined in the Corfu Channel off Albania on 22 October 1946: he was among the 28 members of crew killed on the same occasion.
