The British War Medal awarded to Engineer J. L. Crockhart, D.S.C., Royal Naval Reserve, who was decorated for his services in the cross-channel ferry Biarittz at the evacuation of Dunkirk: he subsequently died of wounds received aboard the S.S. Maid of Orleans, which ship was torpedoed and sunk off Normandy in June 1944

James Lang Crockhart, who was born in Southampton on 12 June 1890, was appointed Sub. Lieutenant (E.) in the Royal Naval Reserve (R.N.R.) in March 1915. He subsequently served in the armed merchant cruiser Ebro and in the minelayer H.M.S. Wahine and relinquished his commission in March 1919.
Recalled on the renewal of hostilities, he was appointed to the troop transport - ex-cross channel ferry - Biarittz, in which ship he won his D.S.C. for services off Dunkirk (London Gazette 16 August 1940, refers). He later joined the S.S. Maid of Orleans as 3rd Engineer Officer and was mortally wounded when she was torpedoed and sunk off Normandy on 28 June 1944: he died two days later at St. Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth; sold with copied research.
