Thomas William Barclay arrived in France as an Acting Sergeant Trumpeter in the 1/1st Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry on 23 July 1915. In May 1916, the unit was reformed and served as XI Corps Cavalry Regiment. As verified by his MIC, Barclay was subsequently reduced to Corporal for misconduct and served in the 7th (Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry) Battalion, Border Regiment. The same source states that he was awarded the Silver War Badge.
