Robert H. Develin was a founder member of 2nd King Edward's Horse (K.E.H.), a unit raised by private subscription under the auspices of Sir John Norton-Griffiths in August 1914. Embarked for France in early May 1915, the unit joined the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and, in June 1916, on returning to mounted duties, it was joined by a Service Squadron of the 21st Lancers. On returning to the U.K. in August 1917, 2nd K.E.H. was absorbed in to the Tank Corps.
