The recipient was taken P.O.W. in the Foret de Nieppe on 28 May 1940, whilst serving in 225/57th Anti-Tank Regiment. The previous day the S.S. Verfugungs Division launched a determined attack on the forest and, owing to the gallant work of scattered artillery units, took severe casualties; see George H. Stein's The Waffen S.S.: Hitler's Elite Guard at War 1939-1945, for further details. Belton ended the war in Stalag 20B at Marienburg, Germany; sold with copied casualty returns.
