Robert Arthur Pye, a native of Clayton-le-Moors in Lancashire, originally enlisted in the South Lancashire Regiment. However, it was as a member of 3/8th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, that he first saw active service, when he was embarked for Egypt. Subsequently ordered to France, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in August 1917 and, as cited above, was killed by an enemy bomb on 13 August 1918, whilst serving in 10th Balloon Company. In writing to his sister, an officer of the Company stated that Pye 'was perhaps too little afraid of them [bombs] and used to remark that they were not meant for him.' He was 47 years of age and is buried in Duisans British Cemetery in the Pas de Calais, France; sold with copied newspaper obituary with portrait photograph.
