Sidney Ernest Gill was born in Petersfield, Hampshire in January 1889 and enlisted in the Royal Marines Light Infantry at Deal in April 1906. Posted to the Chatham Division, he served in the battleship H.M.S. Duncan (September-January 1915) and in the monitor Prince Rupert (June 1915-October 1917), in which latter period he was advanced to Corporal. Having then been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1922 and gained his Sergeant's stripes, Gill came ashore in January 1928; sold with copied service record
