Henry Stevenson was born in Limehouse, London in December 1867 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in January 1890.

Joining H.M.S. Terrible in March 1898, he served ashore as a Bluejacket during the Boer War and was present in the relief of Ladysmith operations, including the action at Tugela Heights (Queen's Medal & 2 clasps); so, too, in subsequent operations off China (Medal). He was advanced to Leading Stoker in the same period and, having then attained Petty Officer status in the summer of 1906, he was appointed Chief Stoker in early 1911.

Recalled from the Royal Fleet Reserve on the outbreak of hostilities, Stevenson served in the armed merchant cruiser Celtic from November 1914 to January 1916 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in August of the latter year. He was demobilised in September 1919; sold with copied service record.
