William Loasby was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire and enlisted in the 59th Foot in January 1808. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he was embarked for Spain and was present in the Corunna operations; he subsequently received the Medal & clasp.

Transferred to the 1st Battalion in September 1810, while stationed at Newry, Ireland, he was next embarked for the East Indies, where he served in Batavia and Java. He was advanced to Corporal in June 1814 and, having moved to Fort William in Bengal, to Sergeant in December 1817, but lost his stripes whilst stationed at Cawnpore in the summer of 1823.

Subsequently seconded for duty with the Engineers, he was actively employed in the Bhurtpoor operations in 1825 (Medal & clasp), and regained his Corporal's stripes in the same year. Having then returned to normal regimental employ, he was advanced to Sergeant in February 1828. Loasby, who was embarked for England in the following year, was discharged at Weedon barracks in August 1829; sold with copied muster details.
