The India General Service 1908-35 Medal awarded to Subadar Phuman Singh, 1-151st Sikhs, late 36th Sikhs, who was awarded the I.O.M. 3rd Class for the action at Fort Cavagnari on 13 September 1897

India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, Afghanistan N.W. F. 1919 (Subdr. Phuman Singh, 1/151/Sikh Infy.), contact marks and edge nicks, nearly very fine

Phuman Singh joined the Indian Army as a Sepoy in the 36th (Sikh) Regiment of Bengal Infantry in August 1894 and first saw action in operations on the Samana and Kurram on the North-West Frontier in 1897-98. It was in the course of these operations that he won the I.O.M. 3rd Class for his part in the action at Fort Cavagnari on 13 September 1897. The joint citation - published in G.G.O. 133 of February 1898 - states:

'For conspicuous gallantry at Fort Cavagnari on 13 September 1897, on which occasion they took part in a daring sortie. The party, with the assistance of a reinforcement under Havildar Sundar Singh, drove the enemy from their sangars at the point of the bayonet, and captured three of their standards.'

Phuman Singh went on to witness further action with the Tirah Field Force 1897-98, including the capture of the Sampagna Pass and the reconnaissance of the Siran Sar (Medal & 3 clasps).

Advanced to Jemadar in May 1914 and to Subadar in April 1916, he served in the Mesopotamian Field Force until the war's end (British War and Victory Medals). He then transferred to the 1-151st Sikhs at the time of the Third Afghan War (Medal & clasp); sold with copied research.
