(x) The Crimea Medal awarded to Private W. Sills, 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, who was killed in at at the Battle of Inkermann on 5 November 1854

Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Wm. Sills. 1st Bn. Rifle Bde.), officially impressed naming, minor solder repair to left carriage between second and third clasps, edge knocks, very fine

William Sills was killed in action at the battle of Inkermann on 5 November 1854, one of 23 officers and men of the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade who fell on that date.

The Battalion went to the assistance of the hard-pressed General Pennefather on the heights of Inkermann, where, true to form, many of the riflemen fought independently in pairs or trios, foraging detonating caps from dead Russians when their own were exhausted. The action culminated with a push up Shell Hill, the riflemen evicting the Russians from the ridge after charging with fixed swords.
