1863 (10 Aug.) Officer's letter from J. Long aboard H.M.S. Archer to his mother in Arundel, Sussex, bearing GB 1854-57 1d. red (6) paying officer's rate, each cancelled with neat "51" (London) diamond in barred oval, showing on reverse London and Arundel (both 11.9) transit and arrival marks. The letter begins "My dearest Mamma, This is a very miserable hole..before reporting that the Archer and Rattlesnake will soon be proceeding to Ascension; accompanied with a hand drawn map and sketch of Cape Coast Castle. Flap missing, though fascinating early correspondence. Also 1869 (9.12) letter from "Jellah Coffee" from sailor aboard "H.M.S. Growler" with similar content.
